Diabetics Can Prevent Vein Disease

There are two main types of diabetes and both can cause chronically high blood sugar if not managed properly. When blood sugar stays too high for long periods of time, it damages the linings of veins and arteries, causing them to narrow. This is how vein disease like varicose veins sets in.

The reality is that diabetes and vein disease are related. The latter can lead to heart disease and obesity is a serious risk factor. Often, people with diabetes have difficulty losing weight and tend to gain it faster than others. In both types of diabetes, this can be due to poor management of diet.

Type 1 Diabetes

This form of diabetes starts in childhood and is also known as insulin dependent diabetes because the patient will need to have insulin injections in order to survive. Along with a strict diet and regular exercise, this disease is manageable.

On the other hand, if the diet is high in sugars and fats and the lifestyle is sedentary, then one begins to get overweight and obesity eventually occurs. All of this leads to poor circulation and vein disease which is very hard to treat. Increasing doses of insulin cause more fat to be stored, making it worse.

Type 2 Diabetes

This form of diabetes is also known as late onset diabetes because it usually does not occur until after the age of 40 or so. Insulin is not required for treating this condition but a careful diet and good, regular exercise need to be included. Sometimes oral medications are prescribed to help with the disease symptoms.

Type two diabetes usually occurs due to being overweight or obese from an unhealthy diet high in sugar along with a sedentary lifestyle. Again, this leads to vein and heart disease. In fact, most people with type two diabetes also have high blood pressure and poor circulation.

Prevention of Vein Disease

There are ways a diabetic can prevent vein disease. The most important factor in this is a healthy diet. The diet needs to be low in saturated fats, low in sugar and simple carbohydrates, high in protein, and high in fiber. When sugars are consumed, they should be in natural forms like from fruit, not sodas and candy.

Another important component is regular exercise. By far and wide, a sedentary lifestyle is a major cause of diseases like type two diabetes and it can worsen the condition of those with type one diabetes. Diabetics must exercise a minimum of three days per week with moderate to intense exercise.

Legs should be elevated when resting to prevent varicose veins and loose, non-restrictive clothing should be worn to allow good circulation. Blood pressure needs to be monitored and kept at a healthy level. A healthy weight needs to be maintained and this means losing weight now if it is too high.

So you can see that the vein problems can be prevented but diabetics of both types are at very high risk and need to take precautions to lead a healthy lifestyle always.
