CLEAP participants meet with officials in Mexico City

Civic Leader Education & Advocacy Program (CLEAP) participants spent day three in Mexico City meeting with Mexican federal policymakers and the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar.

Thursday, May 30 recap:

The day started with participants touring the Cámara de Diputados (Mexico’s House of Representatives) inside El Palacio Legislativo de San Lázaro  where the participants learned about the legislative branch in Mexico. Afterwards, participants met with federal lawmaker Diputado Mario Alberto Torres of Veracruz (Morena), one of several migrant lawmakers serving in Mexico's federal legislative arm. The discussion focused on forced migration due to climate change and the direct consequences of trade and economic policies. Participants also brought up the topic of the increased militarization of Mexico’s borders, efforts funded by the U.S.

In the afternoon, participants met with the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar. Participants discussed the importance of comprehensive immigration reform in the U.S. and supporting long-term undocumented immigrants in the interim with work permits and temporary protections using existing federal law. DACA participants also shared the need for a permanent solution to support Dreamers.
