Our Mission

We are working to create a more equitable central mountain region where Latinas and Latinos are thriving, engaged and leading in all of our communities. We do this by creating opportunities where Latinas and Latinos advocate for themselves, actively participate in all civic institutions and take leadership roles in all decision-making tables. We are also building and growing political and community power in the region through our Action Fund and other affiliated organizations.

Our Organizations

Based in Glenwood Springs, Voces Unidas was the first Latino-created, Latino-led, and Latino-serving advocacy organization in the central mountain region in Colorado. We operate in Garfield, Pitkin, Eagle, Lake and Summit counties. Voces Unidas includes four separate organizations, all of which work independently to accomplish the larger mission. The Job

Voces Unidas is seeking a full-time communications director who is highly motivated, creative and committed to social justice. The communications director helps implement digital strategy at the policy, electoral and organizing level, grow social media and online presence and engagement, lead the organizations' media relations and drive content and messaging strategy. The communications director will have a key role in our work to win policy and campaign fights that advance our organizational goals. This position can be based in Denver or in any other office in the central mountain region. At least monthly travel will be required to Glenwood Springs. This position supports all affiliated organizations. 

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day communication needs of the organizations, including managing social media, websites, blogs, newsletters, email blasts and media relations;

  • Serve as the in-house rapid response communications lead for all policy and political messaging, and manage incoming requests/opportunities from media and other external partners;

  • Serve as the primary storyteller and writer for the organizations, sharing stories and creating content/copy about our mission, initiatives and impact to publish on social media, blogs, newsletters, reports, and more;

  • Manage media relations to position the organization as the regional thought leader on our policy issues and campaigns, including writing and placing regular opinion editorials or columns, coordinating media opportunities, scheduling interviews and doing outreach to place stories, sometimes doing interviews as a spokesperson for the organization (with contract support, as needed);

  • Manage and maintain a robust presence on social media, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, to grow online supporters and engagement;

  • Support online advocacy by creating and publishing compelling email blasts and social media posts to mobilize supporters to take action;

  • Prepare and publish bilingual newsletters to increase engagement with funders and participants (with contract support, as needed);

  • Design, edit, produce, and distribute all print and digital materials (with contract support, as needed);

  • Assist with editing staff writing including blog posts, op-eds, grant applications, grant reports, and publications;

  • Support the membership and fundraising campaigns through list development, data tracking, toolkit creation, reporting, and more;

  • Manage the Salsa Labs database and tools, including data management, email marketing, form creation, reporting, list segmentation, and support staff in their use of the platform;

  • Maintain high quality and timely website presence for both organizations;

  • Train and advise staff on communications strategy and social media best practices;

  • Create style and brand guides for the organizations; 

  • Manage interns and vendors, as needed; and

  • Perform other duties as required to support the work of the organization as a whole.

 

Required Job Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

 

  • Alignment to Voces Unidas’ missions; 

  • Passionate about community organizing and movement-building;

  • 5 to 7 years of professional communications experience, especially in the advocacy and policy space;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Experience developing communications plans and writing email blasts, blog posts, talking points and press releases;

  • Experience managing media relations and pitching stories to reporters;

  • Experience writing opinion editorials or columns on policy issues is preferred;

  • Experience managing the execution of annual reports and other design collateral; 

  • Experience with content management systems to manage websites;

  • Experience creating compelling graphics and videos for social media using Canva,  Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools or experience managing vendors for these type of projects;

  • Prior experience using and/or willingness to learn how to use digital organizing and campaign tools: CRMs (i.e. ActionNetwork, Salesforce, Salsa Labs, etc); texting (i.e. Hustle, ThruText, etc); relational organizing (i.e OutreachCircle, Reach, Empower, etc); online advocacy (i.e. Salsa Engage, Phone2Action, etc); and story collection (Soapboxx, Flipgrid);

  • Ability to work independently without much guidance and be able to execute communication projects as a team of one, while also using vendors and contractors when necessary;

  • Excellent project management and time management skills: ability both rapidly respond to day-to-day needs while conceiving and implementing bigger projects over time;

  • Be able to travel by car to main office in Glenwood Springs at least monthly and work occasional weekend or evening events, as needed; 

  • Access to a car;

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred; and

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English languages is preferred.

 

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary is between $65,000 to $80,000, based on experience
