Garfield RE-2 parents formally recall school board member Tony May

In late January, leaders of the Coalition for Responsible Education in RE-2 filed just under 2,900 signatures in support of recalling school board member Tony May.

Garfield County’s Clerk and Recorder confirmed that enough signatures had been turned in to recall Tony May. A total of 2,441 signatures were validated, exceeding the required 2,038 threshold to call for a special election.

The date of the special election is yet to be determined.

The parent-led effort to remove board member Tony May from his seat comes as a result of his support for the controversial American Birthright Standard (ABS) social studies curriculum. Bipartisan outcry from an unprecedented number of parents and community members halted the implementation of ABS, and sparked initial conversations that ultimately led to this successful recall effort.
